Phosphorescent brings to C’est la vie to First Avenue
Phosphorescent returned to Minneapolis for the first time in years and played to a relative meager Saturday night crowd at First Avenue. On tour to support the 2018 release, C’est la vie, singer-songwriter Matthew Houck and his six-piece band were in fine form but the energy stayed on one flat line and it felt a little sleepy. The swirling arrangements and cutting emotional vocals that imbue so many Phosphorescent recordings were oftentimes lost, and while the crowd head-bobbed along, there weren’t a lot of peaks in energy to speak of.
Phosphorescent has released some excellent albums however, and I highly recommend giving them a listen. You can also check out their performance at Pitchfork Live below.
