The Wytches at Turf Club

English psych-surf band The Wytches pound Turf Club in St. Paul

The Wytches may very well be my favorite find of 2014. The psych-surf band from Brighton, England pounded the Turf Club in St. Paul with an hour long set that covered nearly all of their hard-hitting debut album Annabel Dream Reader that was released in August, as well as a new song that was played for the first time.

The band started their set with the spacey opening track of Annabel Dream Reader, “Digsaw“. It’s hard not to hear an early Nirvana influence in singer / guitarist Kristian Bell’s approach, and that was especially evident in the guitar on that track. “Gravedweller” stood out as well, as did the slow and heavy “Fragile Male for Sale”, which along with the swinging “Burn Out the Bruise” were two of the best tracks played all night.

For a band that is barely in their early 20s, The Wytches already have the chops and stage presence to rock harder than many bands their senior. I am glad The Wytches made a tour stop in the Twin Cities, and hopefully they catch the buzz they rightfully deserve. Check these guys out!
