Ty Segall & Freedom Band bring Harmonizer to First Avenue
Not a lot of time typically goes by between Ty Segall album releases. It wasn’t even a year ago when Segall released his thirteenth album, Harmonizer, on Drag City Records and now he is back on tour with a return to First Avenue just before his upcoming album Hello, Hi hits the streets.
The show started with a six song acoustic set with bassist Emmett Kelly joining in on acoustic guitar for the last few songs. Ty Segall plowed through “Squealer” from his 2016 album Emotional Mugger with a grin while the fans at First Avenue screamed on in delight. Being a holiday weekend, the venue was just over half-full allowing plenty of room to boogie. As soon as Segall traded his acoustic guitar for his Travis Bean electric, the floor at First Avenue jumped with a mosh pit swirling in the middle.
“Candy Sam”, also from Emotional Mugger, was drawn out and rocked extremely hard and was a big highlight of the night. “Alta” from his excellent 2018 album Freedom’s Goblin was another highlight and the band was locked in and sounded heavy. Bassist Emmett Kelly provided thunder for “Harmonizer” which had everyone in the crowd head banging along.
First Avenue is the perfect venue to see Ty Segall and this show rocked. Although it didn’t quite stack up against his incredible 2018 show at First Avenue, it was excellent in its own right and was an awesome way to spend a Saturday evening in Minneapolis.
