The Kills devour First Avenue with frenetic set
There’s some magic in this place. There really is.
While guitarist Jamie Hince grinded at his guitar, singer Alison Mosshart paced around in circles like a lioness in a cage waiting to be released. When Mosshart finally took to the mic for the opening track “No Wow” at First Avenue, she made it official — The Kills are back and ready to destroy.
Supported on tour by a bassist/keyboardist and a drummer, The Kills’ sound pounded the mainroom. Just like their music, Hince and Mosshart have a push-pull dynamic that speaks volumes onstage. Mosshart commanded the show with a growling voice and blonde hair flailing, while Hince returned with his crunchy guitar tone and a joyful smirk of a smile.
The Kills’ new album Ash & Ice will be on June 3 and the first single “Doing It To Death” had the near capacity crowd rocking hard. “Heart of a Dog“, also from the new album, hit with a percussive bounce that had Mosshart moving with a sultry sway. In addition, “Fried My Little Brains” from the band’s 2003 debut Keep on Your Mean Side was played during the encore and was a fist-pumping gem and one of the best tunes played all night. With an energetic crowd that was into it from the start, Jamie Hince went on to say with gratitude before the show was over, “There’s some magic in this place. There really is.”
The Kills at First Avenue definitely goes down as one of the best shows I’ve seen this year. This concert was hot in every sense of the word.
