My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, and Trampled by Turtles rock Somerset
After the hottest July on record, a cool early August evening and My Morning Jacket playing outdoors in Somerset, WI was a massive treat. Also on the bill were Band of Horses, and Minnesota’s very own Trampled by Turtles. The Minnesota boys, a week off of playing Lollapalooza opened the show—plucking out a smooth forty minute festival-type set that really only hit on their last two releases. A large majority of the early crowd was TBT fans, including kids (was all ages show) dancing and singing along. Ryan Young’s presence on fiddle has really catapulted this band’s live show into new territory.
Band of Horses offered a real nice and contrasting set to Trampled by Turtles. By this time, much of the crowd had entered the amphitheater and people’s chatter at times distracted from the music. When I wasn’t distracted, Band of Horses sounded excellent, it was nice to finally see them. Towards the end of their set, I decided it would be a perfect time to grab a beer, only to find 100+ people in line for one small beer tent. With a crowd estimated at maybe 7000-8000 people, I wonder how the venue dropped the ball on this one??
My Morning Jacket hit the stage just after the sun had dropped. They last played the area at Rock the Garden in Minneapolis in 2011 and that set was short and rain drenched. On this night, the stars were out, a very slight chill was in the air, and hardwood smoke poured in from the adjacent campground which singer, Jim James appreciated greatly. It was a beautiful night of music in the north land. James opened the show with “At Dawn”, dawning a blue and white cape most of the night. Later, the songs got quite spacey at times, including an expansive “Dondante” which I am so happy to have finally seen live. Their set sounded fabulous, it was a fine night.
