Har Mar Superstar loves First Avenue and Minneapolis
I’m not taking my pants off, sorry. These are tattoos. I got leg sleeves motherfucker.
Har Mar Superstar (Sean Tillmann) once again resides in Minneapolis, and the singer didn’t miss a chance at his sold out show at First Avenue to gush about his love of the city and the stage he was playing. His set was loose, and at times rather sloppy, but by the end, the highlights mostly made up for any shortcomings.
The set started with “Prisoner” from his excellent 2013 release Bye Bye 17. Horns were blasting and beachballs were flying and the mostly young crowd was grooving along to awesome tune. Next week, Har Mar Superstar will release his new album Best Summer Ever. Songs like “How Did I Get Through The Days?” showed the artist’s more sensitive side, but on this night, it was the more upbeat party songs that stood out most.
Any momentum this show had was often stifled with Tillmann’s banter between songs. As an artist, he was incredibly grateful for the turnout of fans. As a person, he talked about being Sean Tillmann and wanting to go home and work in his garden. But for the most part, he spoke of his love for First Avenue and how he had spent so much time there that it felt like his living room. “I used to see Rage Against the Machine like every weekend here.” he stated towards the end of the show.
The encore of the show was the saving grace. “Tallboy” absolutely rocked with an R&B styled groove that had everyone dancing. Having been shirtless and sweaty for most of the set now, Har Mar Superstar ended the night with his soulful hit, “Lady You Shot Me”. It sounded fantastic and the sold out crowd at First Avenue ate it up.
