Festival Palomino 2015
The second annual Festival Palomino was a great success. The weather was perfect, and the bands curated by local heroes Trampled By Turtles provided a wonderful mix of folk and rock. Here are a few thoughts on the music of Festival Palomino 2015.
- Trampled By Turtles – Maybe I’m getting old, but I am really starting to like Trampled By Turtles’ folkier side over their speed-demon bluegrass side. The Duluth tribute “Winners” from their 2014 release Wild Animals was gorgeous, as was the Tim Saxhaug led cover of The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. Ending the festival with the bagpipe-backed single “Alone” was also a very nice touch.
- Dr. Dog – You know what you’re going to get when you see Dr. Dog live, and it is good. They one of the most consistent live acts I’ve ever seen, and their set was a great amount of fun as always.
- Father John Misty – Holy shit! Is there a better performer than Father John Misty in rock music right now? I say no. This was a tough act to follow, and was the best set of the entire festival.
- Benjamin Booker – Hard rocking and awesome, I loved this set. I can’t wait to see Benjamin Booker live again.
- Shakey Graves – Thumping Texas-infused good times. Shakey Graves was a very nice addition to festival.
- Laura Marling – Wow, she put on the most beautiful set of the day. I was truly impressed by her pure voice and unique songwriting.
- Calexico – These guys are fantastic players and provided a great vibe as the sun blasted the grounds of Festival Palomino.
- Lydia Loveless – She’s come a long way since I first photographed her at the Kitty Cat Club several years ago. Her songs have a dark edge that shined bright early in the day.
- The Lowest Pair – I only caught their last song and it sounded twangy and good.
