Dr. Dog digs deep at Turf Club
Dr. Dog at Turf Club in St. Paul, MN
Fans were treated with a gem, as Dr. Dog dug deep into their musical library for their sold out show at Turf Club in St. Paul, MN. Returning from sunny Cancun, Mexico and My Morning Jacket’s One Big Holiday festival, Dr. Dog brought the heat with them, quickly setting fire to a chilly St. Paul night with their classic opening song “The Rabbit, The Bat, and The Reindeer”, from their 2008 album Fate.
From there on out, the band was spot on and gave the crowd a taste of many of older tunes that rarely see the live stage. Slower songs like “100 Years” from Fate sounded fantastic. “Heavy Light” which came up next was one of the biggest standouts of the night. The breakdown across the bridge included an extended drum jam, that worked into heavy guitars, and it rocked hard. “The Beach” that followed slowed things down, but was quite heavy and moving as well.
During the encore, bassist Toby Leaman let loose with raging vocals on “Lonesome“, the opening song on the band’s wonderful 2012 album Be the Void. It was so good. Dr. Dog ended the night with the rarely played fast and fun “Fuck It”. Once again the band gave their allegiance of Twin Cities fans something to smile about. The setlist was a contrast to many of their previous shows I have seen, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Now lets see what First Avenue brings.
