Django Django sells out First Avenue in Minneapolis
Django Django at First Avenue
“We are halfway through the tour and I don’t think it has been this good yet,” exclaimed Jimmy Dixon, bassist of the UK art-rock band Django Django, in the middle of the well sold-out show at First Avenue on Saturday, March 16.
Django Django formed at the Edinburgh College of Art in 2009, and their music and stage presence seems to show how little difference there truly is between tangible art and performance art. Their set was bouncy and percussive; bass pounding through First Avenue and never wavering once, as the mostly young crowd jumped along. From the weird and at times nearly non-existent lights, to the fusion of styles mixed into the music, to the energy of the band — this show was fantastic and truly unique and I enjoyed every minute of it. This was one of the best sets I have seen at the mainroom in a long time. Minneapolis always supports the up and coming bands from Europe, and Django Django was extremely appreciative of the warm energy. After seeing this performance, they deserve to be selling out clubs like this.
Opening the evening was the local band Night Moves who recently signed to Domino Records, and who was voted best new band of 2012 by City Pages. They have been on tour with Django Django and were very happy to be playing a sold out mainroom. Overall, their set was quite mellow, at times with a late 70s AM radio feel. This being the first time I have seen them, I was a little bored and expected more.
