Jeff Tweedy brings Twilight Override to sold out First Avenue
Jeff Tweedy brought his 2025 release, Twilight Override, to Minneapolis on a cool early fall evening. Accompanied by his sons Spencer Tweedy on drums, and Sammy Tweedy on vocals and percussion, Tweedy delivered a solid show to a capacity crowd at First Avenue. Flannels and beanies galore, heads bopped to the indie stylings of one of America’s most gifted songwriters.
Songs like “Forever Never Ends” drove a slow to mid-tempo groove forward that was omnipresent for most of the set. “Feel Free” stood out in its quiet rawness, as did the more upbeat and scattered “Diamond Light” that showcased Spencer Tweedy’s diverse chops on the drums. After a quick encore break, Tweedy and his band returned to the stage and played two Minneapolis hits, Prince’s song “Kiss” with Sammy nailing the falsetto vocals, and The Replacement’s classic “Androgynous”.
Even though the show barely shifted gears throughout the night, there was something special about being in the presence of Jeff Tweedy playing alongside his two sons and their friends. It felt familial, it felt real, it felt calm. While times like that are not always the most memorable, they are still really nice to experience in the moment.
