Godspeed You! Black Emperor rock beautiful set at First Avenue
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a bit of an enigma. The experimental music collective from Montreal, Quebec quietly looms in the shadows while their instrumental sound speaks volumes. Their show at First Avenue was brilliant.
On a night when many in Minneapolis / St. Paul were seeing green while celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, Godspeed You! Black Emperor hammered the black confines of First Avenue with a gorgeous, and at times, punishing set. Meandering through dynamics, the collective on this tour was made up of three guitarists, two bassists, two drummers, a violinist, and saxophonist. Together their drones sounded like a sunburst being sucked into oblivion. Along with the film visuals happening behind, the show was engaging and dark and beautiful.
The band is currently on tour to support their 2017 release, Luciferian Towers, on Constellation Records. Check it out, and go see them when they are in your area for a truly unique and heavy post-rock experience.
