Lydia Loveless at Kitty Kat Club

With a stunning raw country voice akin to Loretta Lynn, 20-year-old, Lydia Loveless, already has a sound that others twice her age will never acquire.  Recently signed to Bloodshot Records, the Columbus, OH native made the first stop on her new tour at  Minneapolis’ Kitty Kat Club on Tuesday, May 17th.  The intimate club was sparse with guests, but Lydia’s voice and songwriting commanded everyone’s attention who was in attendance.

Lonesome Dan Kase started the show with a nice old-timey delta blues set of tunes.  Then the semi-obnoxious, gypsy-jazzing five-piece band, Cantankerous Folk, got the dance floor moving with a set that ended with a rather unique version of “Creep” by Radiohead.

As soon as Lydia Loveless plugged in her Telecaster and strummed out her first song, the voice shining from her petite frame was both striking and forceful with a tinge of punk behind every note.  Her songs were fantastic, especially considering her age, and bassist, Ben Lamb, who looked as though he’d already played plenty of rock gigs in his life, filled out the sound nicely on a tattered upright bass.  Look for Lydia Loveless soon in a town near you.  She is well worth checking out.
